23 Mar Interning at UNASO: Gaining Practical Experience in Social Work and Social Administration
Introduction
Hi, my name is Wanyana Kellen, and I am pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in social work and social administration at Kyambogo University. As part of my academic program, I completed an internship at the Uganda Network of AIDS Service Organization (UNASO).
Activities performed during the internship
During my internship at UNASO, I was involved in a wide range of activities that allowed me to gain experience in my academic discipline. These activities included advocacy in different social activities, relating with different categories of people living with HIV/AIDS, writing proposals to donors for financial funding to carry out organizational activities, and working together with different CSOs under the HIV/AIDS forum. Additionally, I worked as an overseer for different AIDS NGOs in the country to enhance the proper well-being of people in different areas of the country.
Application of academic theory
Working with UNASO allowed me to put my class theory into practice. For example, I was able to apply social work theories such as the social work behavior theory, social interactionist theory, and social behavioral theory in problem-solving situations. This experience helped me to gain a deeper understanding of these theories and how they can be applied in real-world situations.
Learning environment
The environment at UNASO was conducive to learning and allowed me to be directly involved in various activities. This hands-on experience allowed me to become a multi-practice person and explore different areas of social work and social administration. As social work is a dynamic academic discipline, there is always something new to explore, and UNASO provided me with the opportunity to do so.
Conclusion
In conclusion, my internship at UNASO was a valuable experience that allowed me to gain practical experience in my academic discipline. The organization provided a conducive learning environment that allowed me to put my class theory into practice, and I was able to explore different areas of social work and social administration. I am grateful for the opportunity to work with such a great team and look forward to applying the knowledge and skills I acquired during my internship in my future endeavors.
