Malaria is a significant health challenge in Uganda, with the Ministry of Health reporting high numbers of confirmed cases and deaths. In the Weekly Malaria Report for EPI Week 8 (20th to 26th February 2023), the Ministry of Health highlighted several key indicators and recommendations for addressing this issue.
MALARIA EPIDEMIC ALERT & RESPONSE DISTRICTS
- 164,672 confirmed malaria cases were reported.
- 87.5% reporting rate was achieved.
- 26 reported deaths.
- 45.1% test positivity rate.
- 1 district is having a malaria epidemic.
RESPONSE DISTRICTS
- Bukedi: Tororo, Butaleja, Budaka, Butebo, Kibuku, Pallisa.
- Lango: Amolatar, Alebtong.
- Busoga: Namutumba, Bugiri.
- Teso: Kumi, Serere, Soroti City.
- Ankole: Ntungamo, Isingiro.
- Tooro: Kamwenge, Kikuube, Bundibugyo, Bunyangabu, Kabarole, Fort portal.
- North Central: Buvuma.
TEST POSITIVITY RATES
- Test positivity rate was 45.1% this week compared to 47.1% in week 6.
- TPR range was between 10.8% to 74.6%.
- The top 10 districts with the highest test positivity rates were Namutumba (74.6%), Butaleja (73.7%), Bugiri (69.3%), Luuka (68%), Kibuku (66.8%), Budaka (66.2%), Butebo (65.5%), Tororo (65.3%), Lira (64.4%).
MOST AFFECTED DISTRICTS
- Top 10 districts reporting the most cases this week were: Budaka (4,361), Kampala (4,220), Adjumani (4,112), Agago (4,059), Yumbe (4,039), Butaleja (3,825), Wakiso (3,825), Tororo (3,714), Kibuku (3,641), Iganga (3,549).
ACT AND RDT STOCK
- 26% (38) districts had inadequate ACT stock (<8 weeks).
- 35.6% (52) districts had inadequate RDT stock (<8 weeks).
- Seven districts had <2 weeks of ACT stock: Gomba (0), Amolatar (0), Lyantonde (1), Bukomansimbi (1), Mayuge (1), Lwengo (1), Soroti(1), Lwengo(1).
- Four districts had <2 weeks of RDT stock: Tororo (0), Lwengo (0), Gomba (0), Busia (0), Rakai(0), Sembabule (0), Butebo (1), Butambala (1), Manafwa (1), Kampala (1), Buhweju (1).
- 38 (26%) districts reported overstock of RDTs.
- All districts that have ≤2 weeks of stock for any commodity require immediate support. Districts with an asterisk (*), report less than 1 week of commodities.
REPORTING RATE
- Most districts (74.7% or 109) posted a reporting rate above 80%.
- Thirty-seven districts (25.3%) reported between 50-80%.
- No district had a reporting rate below 50% this week.
